About The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, often referred to simply as Goodyear, is an American multinational manufacturer of automotive and commercial tires. From passenger automobiles to aircraft, Goodyear tires may be found on a number of vehicles across varying industries and applications. Headquartered in Akron, Ohio, Goodyear currently serves as one of the top four tire manufacturers alongside their global competitors.
The history of Goodyear can be traced back to 1898 when their first factory was established in Akron, Ohio. During their more formative years, Goodyear originally produced bicycle and carriage tires, poker chips, and rubber horseshoe pads. With the invention of the automobile, Goodyear quickly grew alongside the emerging industry with their offered products. From supplying Henry Ford with racing tires to a joint venture with the German company Luftschiffbau Zeppelin, Goodyear quickly garnered customers and market expertise that enabled them to consistently grow.
In 1927, Goodyear conducted an initial public offering in which they were listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In the decades following their move to becoming a publicly traded company, Goodyear would rapidly transform into a multinational corporation that excelled in government contracts, competing against rivals, and more. As of the 1970’s, Goodyear is the only major United States tire firm which has remained independent, due to the fact that they took advantage of the emerging market for radial tires as bias-ply technology became obsolete.
As the century came to a close, Goodyear conducted multiple restructuring initiatives, ensuring that their expansion into new markets was unfettered. To achieve this, Goodyear focused themselves on acquisitions as well as began selling and closing off unneeded divisions. In the present, Goodyear has set their eyes on continuing partnerships and joint ventures to further the development of their various products and offerings.
